“Theorizing that one could time-travel within his own lifetime, Dr. Sam Beckett led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top-secret project known as Quantum Leap. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Dr. Beckett prematurely stepped into the project accelerator, and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own time was maintained through brain-wave transmissions with Al, the project observer, who appears in the form of a hologram, that only Dr. Beckett can see and hear. Trapped in the past, Dr. Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.”
The above quote is from the opening sequence of Quantum Leap, one of my favorite TV shows back in the early 1990s. Quantum Leap tells the story of Sam Beckett (played by Scott Bakula) who is lost in time due to a time travel experiment that went “a little caca”. His holographic link to his time, which only he can see and hear, Al Calavicci (played by Dean Stockwell) guides him through his leaps.
Quantum Leap was created by Donald P. Bellisario. The show ran for 5 seasons, from 1989 – 1993. 96 episodes were made. Quantum Leap also picked up 5 Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globe awards along the way. This truly is one of the best shows of its time, in my opinion. The show had a good blend of Science Fiction, Comedy and Drama, the reason why it became so popular, since it appealed to audiences all over the spectrum. A movie is planned for 2009 based on this series, according to Internet Movie Database.
