South African TV Adverts – Part 5
The year 2009 has truly flown by. 2010 is around the corner. This afternoon I came to a shock realization. “I’ve only done 2 posts about TV adverts this year”. This is scandalous. I’ve decided to cover 3 more adverts in this post to make up for my lazy attitude and to provide my readers with the best 3 adverts (in my opinion) out of South Africa in the 2nd half of this year. These 3 adverts prove that creativity in advertising is alive and well in South Africa. The photo below is of the newly completed Cape Town Stadium (formerly Green Point Stadium) which has been built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup (to be hosted by South Africa).
Castle Lager: This TV advert started appearing on South African TV stations in the middle of 2009. It’s a typical beer advert, but it definately builds on the high standard and tradition of the Castle Lager adverts of the past. It’s hard to believe that this brand has been available to South African consumers since 1895. It’s not my favorite lager but it’s a top selling brand in South Africa. Castle Lager won the “World’s Best Bottled Lager” award at the 2000 International Brewing Industry Awards. The 2009 Castle Lager Advert is definately worthy of being featured in this post.
Vodacom: The 2nd Player 23 TV advert of the year. This advert features 2 Springbok rugby fans, Elton and Jan. The song from this advert is performed by Robbie Wessels (who also performs the song in the first advert). The advert features players from the South African rugby squad. Vodacom is still the biggest mobile phone network in South Africa with more than 20 million subscribers and sponsors the Super 14 rugby tournament in South Africa. South Africa performed brilliantly in the International Rugby arena in 2009 so it’s just fair to give this advert the honor of naming it one of the best adverts of th year.
Toyota, South Africa: The Japanese Auto Maker has a strong presence in the South African Motoring market. The brand does not need introduction and is pretty well-known around the world. Toyota is one of the top selling vehicle brands in South Africa. The Toyota Motor Corporation was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda in Japan. This advert features a very talkative dog which makes it one of the most memorable adverts in South Africa for 2009 and worthy of being featured.
