Movie Trailers: Avatar (2009)

Avatar has potential to be one of the best Science Fiction epics of all time (in my opinion). The film is written and directed by James Cameron (who also directed Titanic, Terminator, Terminator 2, True Lies and Aliens). The movie is set in the future. Jake Skully (played by Sam Worthington who also starred in Terminator: Salvation), a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is occupied by a humanoid alien race, the Na’vi who have their own language and culture. The Na’vi are also more physically capable than humans. They’re 10 ft (more than 3 metres) tall with tails and sparkling blue skin and they live in harmony with the unspoilt world they inhabit. As the humans venture deeper into the forests of Pandora to find valuable minerals the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities in an effort to protect themselves and their existence. Jake Skully is selected to infiltrate the Na’vi by becoming part of the Avatar program, a process whereby hybrid Human-Na’vi beings are genetically grown (since humans are not able to breathe the air on Pandora). The process also enables Jake Skully to walk again. He infiltrates the Na’vi but falls in love with Neytiri (a Na’vi female played by Zoe Saldana who starred in Star Trek XI earlier this year). Jake finds himself trapped between military-industrial humans and the Na’vi, forced to choose sides in an epic battle between the two. Avatar has been hailed as being a breakthrough film in terms of filmmaking technology. Cameras were specially designed for 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking for this film. The film also features appearances by Michelle Rodriguez (who starred in Resident Evil, Fast & Furious and Blue Crush), Sigourney Weaver (who needs no introduction), Giovani Ribisi (who starred in Gone in Sixty Seconds and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) and Stephen Lang (another Hollywood veteran actor). Avatar is marked for Worldwide release on the 16th of December 2009, let’s hope it reaches South Africa on the same day, because it truly sounds and looks like a movie that will be worth our time.
