Today is Monday, not my favorite day of the week. In my previous post about Songs About Monday I regretfully did not mention I don’t like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats argumentably the best song ever released to describe the feelings most people have about Monday. Some people just don’t want Mondays to exist. I don’t like Mondays was released in 1979 and was a UK number 1 single for 4 weeks. The song was the band’s second number one single. The song was written by Bob Geldof (now a prominent figure in the British music industry and The Boomtown Rats frontman). Pete Briquette, Gerry Cott, Johnny Fingers, Garry Roberts and Simon Crowe were the other members of The Boomtown Rats. Bob Geldof is widely recognized for his anti-poverty efforts concerning Africa. In 1984, he and Midge Ure founded the charity supergroup Band Aid to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. He also co-wrote the song Do They Know It’s Christmas for Band Aid. Geldof received an honorary knighthood (Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 (even though he’s Irish).

This is the video for a live version of I don’t like Mondays followed by the lyrics:
The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down
The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen
Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reasons do you need?
Oh Oh Oh Oh
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot
The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down
And all the playing’s stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys a while
And school’s out early and soon we’ll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
(With the problems of the how’s and why’s)
And he can see no reasons
‘Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?
Oh Oh Oh
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

I remember way back in 1996 when i still used to DJ at varsity, playing this tune at an Edinburgh niteclub and then almost getting beaten by the crowd… This was for two reasons:
1. I didn’t know what the song was about ( http://www.eightyeightynine.com/music/boomtownrats-mondays.html )
2. This had just happened ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre )
mad old world…
