2013 MK Awards Nominees Announced

MK Awards 350x331 2013 MK Awards Nominees Announced2013 is off to a rocking start! The 2013 MK Awards Nominations were announced last week. SA’s hottest music talent will be competing in 10 categories. Viewers votes will determine who will come out as winners at the finale event to be held at The State Theatre in Pretoria on 24 March 2013.

I’m very glad that there are no pop categories for this year’s MK Awards. Thank goodness for that. No more possibilities of being tortured by a performance by Bobby van Jaarsveld or Kurt Darren at the Awards Ceremony.

MK has changed things up a bit for this year’s awards though. They’ve introduced the Best SA Music Festival and Best Solo categories. Phase one of the 2013 MK Awards took place between 10 and 25 January. People had the opportunity to nominate who they felt best deserved to be in the Best Live and Best SA Music Festival categories. The artists and festival who came out with the most nominations by the 25th of January were included as official nominees.

On Friday the full list of 2013 MK Awards nominees were announced. Viewers have between 1 February and 8 March 2013 to vote for their favorite artists on MK’s website and MK Facebook page.

Check out the list of the 2013 MK Awards nominees below. In true Running Wolf’s Rant fashion, I’m going to give you my predictions for each category. Let’s see if I can be spot on for this year’s awards.

Best Video

  • Die Heuwels Fantasties – Verraadplaas
  • Tailor – Wolf
  • The Frown – The National
  • The Parlotones – Honey Spiders
  • Van Coke Kartel – Tot Die Son Uitkom
  • Zebra & Giraffe – I’ll Blame you

This is a tough one to call, but I’m going to go with Van Coke Kartel in this category. This song was definitely one of my favorites of 2012 and the video was just bloody awesome. ‘Tot Die Son Uitkom’ has also established itself as one of the best live songs that Van Coke Kartel plays at their shows

Best Newcomer

  • Gangs of Ballet – Hello Sweet World
  • Goodnight Wembley – Time Machine
  • Spoegwolf – Lenie Blou
  • Tailor – Wolf
  • Toya DeLazy – Pump It On
  • Woodstock Mafia – Electric Light

All the nominees in this category deserve to win this MK Award in this category, but my favorite out of them all are Goodnight Wembley. These Cape Town boytjies will be one of the bands to watch in 2013. I can’t wait to get my music loving paws on their album (which is hopefully coming out later this year).

Best Group

  • Die Antwoord – Baby Is On Fire
  • ISO – Destiny
  • The Plastics – Stereo Kids
  • Van Coke Kartel – Dis ‘n Land
  • Zebra & Giraffe – I’ll Blame You

Like most of the categories in the 2013 MK Awards, this is a tough call. I’m leaning towards giving The Plastics this award, but I’m also leaning towards ISO and Van Coke Kartel. If you ask me, one of these three bands will win this award.

Best Rock

  • Jack Parow ft. Francois van Coke – Hard Partytjie Hou
  • Taxi Violence – Unholy
  • Van Coke Kartel – Dis ‘n Land
  • Woodstock Mafia – Electric Light
  • Zebra & Giraffe – I’ll Blame you

Just when I thought that my predictions would become easier, this category comes along. I will be glad if any of the nominees wins this award, they all deserve it. I’m thinking that it’s going to be a battle between Van Coke Kartel and Taxi Violence though.

Best SFX/Animation

  • Absinthe – Love Will Tear US Apart
  • Haezer ft. Lark – Brave
  • Mr Sakitumi – Jungle Jimmy
  • The Frown – The National
  • The Parlotones – Honey Spiders

I’m rooting for Haezer featuring Lark for this award. The song and the music video is just epic. I might a little biased, but I’m a huge fan of Lark and Haezer and I really don’t want the Parlotones to win an award this year.

Best Indie

  • Ashtray Electric – Bittersweet Manipulator
  • Black Handed Kites – Up
  • Mug-Shot – Bare Bones
  • Shortstraw – One Long Day
  • The Plastics – Stereo Kids

Like I’ve said earlier, the folks from the 2013 MK Awards don’t always make it easy. I am thinking that this is going to be a 4 way battle between Ashtray Electric, Shortstraw, Black Handed Kites and The Plastics. It will be damn interesting to see who wins this award in the end.

Best Dance

  • Die Antwoord – Baby Is On Fire
  • Double Adapter – Eat You Alive
  • Goodluck – Harlem
  • Johnny Neon – Hearts
  • Pascal & Pearce – Disco Sun

I’m not a huge fan of Dance music, but having seen Die Antwoord and Double Adapter live, I’m thinking that it will be a battle between them and Goodluck.  Only time will tell who walks away with this MK Award.

Best Solo

  • Bouwer Bosch ft. Jaco van der Merwe – (K)anker
  • Chiano Sky – Sick Sick Sick
  • Jeremy Loops – Howling
  • Shotgun Tori – Sweet Weather
  • Toya De Lazy – Love Is In The Air

This is between Jeremy Loops and Shotgun Tori for me. Both of these artists blew me away with their live performances and made their mark in the SA Music industry in 2012. It will be interesting to see who walks away with the honours, though.

Best Live Act

  • Bittereinder
  • Fokofpolisiekar
  • Gangs of Ballet
  • Jeremy Loops
  • The Black Cat Bones
  • Van Coke Kartel

This is toughest call of them all. I’m a huge fan of all the bands on this list. It will be pretty awesome if Van Coke Kartel wins this MK Award again, but I’m also secretly hoping for a new winner this time around. Bittereinder played some awesome live shows, Jeremy Loops blew audiences away all over the country, the Black Cat Bones are one of the hardest working acts and Fokofpolisiekar hasn’t disappointed me with a live show in 2012. Let’s just wait and see what happens here.

Best SA Music Festival

  • Oppikoppi 2012
  • RAMfest 2012
  • Rocking The Daisies 2012
  • Synergy 2012
  • Up The Creek 2012

Having been to Up The Creek, Synergy Live, RAMFest and Oppikoppi last year, this is a tricky choice for me. I liked Up The Creek because it was such an awesome chilled out vibe, I liked Synergy Live because The Prodigy were there and the sound was bloody awesome, I iked RAMFest because In Flames and AWOLNATION were there and the Narrow played a kick-ass show and I like Oppikoppi because the festival was better organized than 2011 and it broke attendance records. Maybe all five these festivals are going to share this award, who knows?
