Dullstroom has been described to me as a small drinking town with a fishing problem. Be that as it may, once a year this tourist mecca transforms into a festival venue that is bound to instill a sense of heart & inspiration into any lover of good music & beautiful scenery.
Between the 5th and 7th of July Dullstroom will play host to the 3rd annual Dullstroom Winter Festival & this time Baine’s Cape Mountain Whiskey has come aboard to make sure that festival goers get to to experience the best that music has to offer in one of the most awe inspiring towns in our beloved country.
Awarded World’s Best Grain Whisky at the 2013 World Whisky Awards, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky is proudly South African and the country’s first 100% single grain whisky. Inspired by the Cape Mountains and their natural beauty, the whisky is crafted at The James Sedgwick Distillery in the Boland town of Wellington. It’s uniquely double matured – first for three years in specially selected oak casks previously used only for bourbon, then for a further two years in new set of ex-bourbon casks to allow for maximum interaction between the wood and spirit. The result is a warm mouth-feel with a mix of toffee, floral and vanilla flavours, a hint of spice softened by sweet undertones, and an exceptionally smooth finish. Baine’s is not for sale to persons under the age of 18.
Year round, Dullstroom is a popular destination for fly fishing enthusiasts, breakfast runs or just getting away from it all. Located about 230 km from Johannesburg it is a place that when visited will never really leave your thoughts.
This year the line up for the Dullstroom Winter Festival includes blues maestro & legendary guitarist Dan Patlansky, who was so popular last year, that festival goers & locals alike asked for his return to the Dullstroom stage. If you have never seen this man in action, this will be the perfect place to do so.
Arno Carstens, lead singer of the Springbok Nude Girls will also be gracing the stage with his solo set. Having performed on hundreds of stages both locally & internationally this performance is sure to be one for the books as well. Other artists that you can catch include the wonderfully gifted songstress Laurie Levine, Matthew Mole, David Garbers & Naming James, the Howlin’ Shibanski, the Runaway Train Cult as well as the Hinds Brothers. Also joining the fray will be the tumultuous & funny stories & songs of Radio Kalahari Orkes, who is of course led in their musical pursuit by none other than the great Ian Roberts.
Yet, the music is not the only reason to visit Dullstroom over that weekend. The festival also plays host to a fly fishing competition as well as beautiful trail runs & a scenic mountain bike race. The multitude of different restaurants in & around the town & festival are sure to satisfy the most stubborn of food critics.
Accommodation is plentiful & you can bring the kids along as well as the program includes kids activities such as face painting, games & pony rides in a secure environment. Lastly, Baine’s Cape Mountain Whiskey will also host a whiskey tasting at the event to teach you more about the do’s and don’ts of this age old drink.
There you have it. There is no reason not to come & enjoy this unique festival & all it has to offer. Check out the program below as well as the links for more info. Tickets on sale at Ticketbreak. Please tickets give you access to the venues. Entrants for the other activities like fishing, mountain biking, etc should please enter at via the official Dullstroom Winter Festival website.
