6 Corporations Infographic

The global village is a lot smaller than you think and this infographic featuring 6 corporations that own 1500 newspapers, 1100 magazines, 9000 radio stations, 1500 TV stations and 2400 publishers says it all.

The 6 corporations referred to in this infographic are General Electric, News-Corp, Disney, Viacom, Time Warner and CBS. These 6 massive multinational companies basically control most of the media that the world reads, watches and listens every day. It’s kinda scary if you ask me.

6 Corporations

General Electric: This corporation was founded in 1892 in New York in the USA. The company operates through four segments: Energy, Technology Infrastructure, Capital Finance and Consumer & Industrial. General Electric basically owns / operates NBC, Comcast, Universal Pictures and Focus Features.

News-Corp: This corporation was founded in Adelaide, Australia in 1979 by Rupert Murdoch. Besides Fox (which includes 20th Century Fox and Fox News) and the two Newspapers mentioned News-Corp also owns multiple Newspapers and Magazines  in the UK, Australia, Fiji and Ireland. News-Corp is the world’s second-largest media group as of 2011 in terms of revenue, and the world’s third largest in entertainment as of 2009.

Disney: Also known as the Walt Disney Company, this corporation was founded in 1923 in Los Angeles, California in 1923 by Roy and Walt Disney. Besides ABC, ESPN, Pixar, Miramax and Marvel Studios, this corporation also owns Hulu and Lucasfilm. Disney is the largest media conglomerate in the world in terms of revenue.

Viacom: This corporation was founded in 2006 and is a spin-off of the CBS Corporation (which was formerly known as Viacom). Besides MTV, Paramount and the other companies listed in the 6 Corporations infographic Viacom also owns Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and VH1. Viacom operates approximately 170 networks reaching more than 600 million subscribers in 160 countries.

Time Warner: Formerly known as AOL Time Warner, this corporation was founded in 1990. As of mid-2010, it was the world’s second largest media and entertainment conglomerate in terms of revenue (behind The Walt Disney C ompany), as well as the world’s largest media conglomerate. Two formerly separate companies, Warner Communications, Inc. and Time Inc. (along with the assets of a third company, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.), form the current Time Warner corporation. Besides owning CNN, Time, HBO and Warner Bros, this corporation also owns New Line Cinema, The CW Television Network, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult Swim, DC Comics,  Hanna-Barbera and Castle Rock Entertainment.

CBS Corporation: CBS was founded as Viacom in 1971 and in became the CBS Corporation in 2006. The company owns Showtime, the Smithsonian Channel, Jeopardy, 60 Minutes, Last.fm, CNET and various other subsidiaries. The Company’s operations span virtually every field of media and entertainment, including cable, publishing, radio, TV, film, outdoor advertising, and interactive and socially responsible media.
