Astana is the capital and 2nd largest city of Kazakhstan. The city was founded in 1830. In Kazakh the word “Astana” literally means “Capital”. In 1961 the was renamed “Tselinograd”, in 1991 it was renamed to “Aqmola” and the name Astana was adopted in 1998. the city became the capital city of Kazakhstan in 1997. Climatically, Astana is the second coldest capital city in the world (behind Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia). Temperatures of −35 °C (−31 °F) to −40 °C (−40 °F) are common in the early winter.
