Gary Kirsten 377x480 Gary Kirsten appointed as new Proteas coachGary Kirsten is no stranger to South African cricket fans. He made his test cricket and ODI debut in 1993 for the Proteas. He played in 101 test matches and 185 One Day Internationals for South Africa between 1993 and 2004. He maintained a strike rate in both test matches and ODI’s of above 40.00. He scored 21 test 100s, 34 test 50s, 13 ODI 100s and 45 ODI 50s in his career. He played his domestic cricket for Western Province. After he retired from International Cricket he started his own cricket academy in 2007 and he coached India from 2008 to 2011. India won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup in April this year. He’s also the reason that India is one of the top ranked test cricket sides on the planet.

Today it was announced that Gary Kirsten will be the new Proteas coach. His assistants will be former fast bowler Allan Donald and Warriors coach Russell Domingo. Graeme Smith will keep his position as captain of the Proteas test side. AB De Villiers has been appointed as the Proteas ODI and T20 sides, Hashim Amla will be his vice-captain. The Proteas 2011/2012 season starts in October when South Africa hosts Australia and later Sri Lank for their summer tours. I think these changes in South African cricket have come at just the right time. The Proteas need direction after there somewhat disappointing exit out of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Gary Kirsten is definitely the right person for the job.

Proteas Logo 192x300 South African 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Squad AnnouncedSouth Africa will be participating in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. The tournament is jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup will use cricket’s One Day International format. 14 national cricket teams will compete in the tournament. The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup Cup starts on the 19th of February 2011 and ends on the 2nd of April. There will be a total of 49 match played.

The South African squad was announced last night after the Proteas lost their 2nd ODI in a row against India at Newlands in Cape Town.

Here are the 15 players that will represent South Africa in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup:

  • Graeme Smith (Captain)
  • Hashim Amla
  • Johan Botha
  • AB de Villiers
  • JP Duminy
  • Faf du Plessis
  • Colin Ingram
  • Jacques Kallis
  • Morne Morkel
  • Wayne Parnell
  • Robbin Peterson
  • Dale Steyn
  • Imran Tahir
  • Lonwabo Tsotsobe
  • Morne van Wyk (wicket keeper).

I’m fairly impressed with the selection. I just don’t understand why the selector left out veteran wicket keeper Mark Boucher and bowler Albie Morkel. I think that Cricket South Africa should give the South African public a reason for this. Let’s hope the Proteas don’t suffer from “Choking Syndrome” in the upcoming tournament. Running Wolf’s Rant would like to take this opportunity to wish the Proteas the best of luck in the tournament. Make SA Proud Boys!
