Damascus is also known as the “City of Jasmine”. The around Damascus in modern day Syria was first settled in the 2nd millennium BC. Damascus is the capital and largest city in Syria today with an estimated population of 1,7 million people living in the urban area of the city. More than 2.4 million people live in the Damascus metropolitan area today. The city lies about 80 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea.
