Dar Es Salaam is the largest city in the African nation of Tanzania. The city was formerly known as Mzizima. It was the capital city of Tanzania until 1974 (when it lost this status to the current capital city Dodoma). More than 2.4 million live in Dar Es Salaam today. The city was founded in 1862 by the sultan of Zanzibar. It was a small port until the arrival of German colonists in the 1880s. Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s most important city for both business and government. The city contains unusually high concentrations of trade and other services and manufacturing compared to other parts of Tanzania, which has about 80 percent of its population in rural areas.
