For the past 6 years Doritos has been running their “Crash the Superbowl” contest. Consumers are urged to create their own 30 second TV adverts (called TV spots in the US). Entrant compete against each other for a chance to have their TV spot air during the Superbowl. The contest ran from the beginning of October to the end of November in 2011. 6,100 entries were received for the contest this year. Early in January 2012 Doritos revealed the 5 finalist videos that will compete for consumer votes. The winning videos generally provide buzz on the Internet for the weeks following the big game.
Just like last year, a $1 million cash prize is on the line if a consumer-created video scores the number one spot on the USA Today Ad Meter. The maker of the ad that actually makes it to the Super Bowl will get a guaranteed job working on a Doritos brand project with The Lonely Island (the well-known Andy Samberg comedy group). An earlier arrangement tapped The Lonely Island to create their own TV spot, but they will no longer be making one. That television airtime will be going to another finalist. In other words, two aspiring filmmakers will see their TV spots air on the night of the Superbowl. The second spot will be selected by an internal team at Doritos. Sadly this contest is only open to United States citizens.
Here are the 5 Finalists in the Doritos “Crash The Superbowl” Contest:
“Bird of Prey”
“Hot Wild Girls”
“Man’s Best Friend”
Social media is a growing industry in South Africa. There is no doubt in my mind about it. There are tons of digital agencies out there running various campaigns, but unfortunately user driven campaigns (especially where uploads of videos are required) are scarce in the South African industry. This is due to a limited (yet growing) amount of Internet Users in SA. South Africa also has a very low broadband penetration rate (which makes uploading videos quite frustrating). With all the cables being laid around the African continent in 2012 / 2013 this might change though. Hopefully we’ll see a South African version of this contest in the coming years.
This bunch of TV spots are some of the funniest adverts for Doritos that I’ve laid my eyes on. Which one is your favorite? Please comment on this post and let the readers of Running Wolf’s Rant know. Feedback is appreciated and welcome here.
