- 2011 South African Music Awards (SAMA) Winners – Part 2
First of all I’d like to extend my congratulations to all of the nominees for the 2012 MTN SA Music Awards. I’m glad that artists and musicians in South Africa are getting the recognition they deserve. To be honest though, there are only a few categories that really interest me in this long list of nominations. I’m particularly happy that aKING, Shadowclub, Taxi Violence, The Graeme Watkins Project, Van Coke Cartel, Ashtray Electric, Dear Reader, Die Heuwels Fantasties, The Dirty Skirts, Wrestlerish, Chris Chameleon, Riku Latti, Goodluck, Jack Parow, Goldfish and Josie Field were nominated this year. All of them have made considerable contributions to the SA Music industry over the last year (in the genres that I adore). This doesn’t mean that I disrespect the other nominees, but genres like Sokkie Dans, Pop, Kwaito, etc aren’t really my thing. I am working on broadening my musical horizons though (and friends like @BaasDeBeer and @lousteyl are helping me in that regard.
Judging by the diversity of nominees this year this could only mean one thing: South African music is alive and well. And if you ask me, the industry is definitely growing. Just look at the amount of music festivals, concerts and gigs happening almost every weekend around the country and you’ll probably agree with me. There’s also a ton of new talent in this country that has the potential to cause a new SA Music explosion. I think 2012 is gonna be a huge year for the SA Music industry.
