Gautemala City is the capital and largest city of Guatemala. The city is also the largest city in Central America. Within the confines of the modern city is the ancient Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu. Kaminaljuyu was first occupied between 1200 and 1000 BC. The city continued to be inhabited for about 2000 years before it was abandoned in the Late Classic Period of Mesoamerican chronology (between 600 & 900 AD). Modern Guatemala City was established in 1773. More than 900,000 live in Guatemala City’s urban area and more than 2.4 million live in the Guatemale City metropolitan area today.
