Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg Sign

After attending the fourth edition of Rise & Shine festival at Sandton Central Park in Johannesburg, I decided to enjoy an after festival drink or two with friends at the brand new Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg in Nelson Mandela Square. I’m well aware that it’s not the first time that this franchise has opened its doors in South Africa, but I’ve never been to one, so I was extremely amped to check it out. Kudos to my friend @Meg_Eckert (who made me aware of it).

One thing is for certain, the venue is gorgeous and it’s in an royal location. The decor is amazing, featuring display cases with suits, shirts, guitars and more from the likes of Elton John, Guns ‘n Roses, Jimi Hendrix, The Jacksons and various other rock ‘n roll legends from over the last 30-50 years. The bar is exceptionally special as well – which bar in South Africa do you know of which features a crap load of drum sticks against the ceiling?

The only thing that put me off was the pricing. Being from Pretoria I’m used to pay between R12 and R16 for a beer and around R20 to R24 for a draught. I’m also fairly comfortable paying R50 to R65 for a burger and chips. I’m prepared to pay R5 more for a drink in Johannesburg, because I know it’s always been more expensive than the capital city, but Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg is charging ridiculous prices for booze and food. To give you an idea: It will set you back R24 for a local beer, R32 for a local draft, R85 for two Suitcases, R27 for a Jagermeister shot or R109 for burger and chips. I know it’s Sandton, but still. Some might say that this is daylight robbery. I took this photo of the Hard Rock Cafe Johannesburg sign outside and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for today.
