Hawaii is the newest state in the United States. Hawaii became part of the USA in 1959. It’s the only state to be made up completely out of Islands. Hawaii is the only state of the United States that is not geographically located in North America, grows coffee, is completely surrounded by water, is entirely an archipelago, has a royal palace and does not have a straight line in its state boundary. Several areas in Hawaii are under the protection of the US National Park Service. The earliest habitation supported by archaeological evidence dates to as early as 300 BCE, probably by Polynesian settlers from the Marquesas, followed by a second wave of migration from Raiatea and Bora Bora in the 11th century. The first recorded European contact with the islands was in 1778 by British explorer James Cook. Today Hawaii is popular tourist destination. The state has an estimated 1.3 million permanent residents (according to a 2010 Census).
