Remember 1996? Remember the biggest movie of that year, Independence Day? This blockbuster was truly a groundbreaking film back in its day. It broke all kinds of box office records when it was released, earning over $817 million at the box office (which makes it the 49th highest grossing film of all time).
I’m a geek by nature and I seriously don’t know how many times I’ve watched Independence Day over the years, but I’ve always enjoyed that movie and I had a mini geekasm when I heard that a sequel (Independence Day: Resurgence) is being filmed and would be released in 2016.
The original cast (Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner) would be reprising their roles (No Will Smith though, meh). The upcoming film will also feature appearances by Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward (who has also appeared in films like The Day After Tomorrow,The Fugitive and Gone Girl), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joey King, Angelababy and William Fichtner (who has also appeared in The Dark Knight, Elysium and The Lone Ranger).
Independence Day: Resurgence is co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich (who also directed the first film. 1994’s Stargate, 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow, 2008’s 10000 BC, 2009’s 2012 and 2013’s White House Down). The film is scheduled for release in June 2016 in the United States. No South African release date is available yet.
The trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence was released over the weekend, check it out below:
This looks pretty damn awesome if you ask me. It looks like this could be one of the biggest movies of 2016. Let’s hope it lives up to expectations.
