Lyons is a city in East-Central France in the Rhône-Alpes region. This city is situated between Paris and Marseille. Lyon is located at 470 km (292 miles) from Paris, 320 km (199 miles) from Marseille, 160 km (99 miles) from Geneva, 280 km (174 miles) from Turin and 600 km (373 miles) from Barcelona. Lyons was founded on the Fourvière hill as a Roman colony in 43 BC by a lieutenant of Julius Caesar. Lyons was a centre for the occupying German forces and also a stronghold of resistance during World War II. Today more than 480,000 people live in the city’s urban area and more than 1.7 million people live in the city’s metropolitan advert.
