Machu Picchu was constructed in +/- 1450 AD at the height of the Incan Empire in South America. The city was abandoned in 1572. Macchu Picchu is located 80 km North West of the Peruvian capital city of Cusco. It was brought to the attention of the outside world in 1911 by historian Hiram Bingham. Since then Macchu Picchu has become a very popular tourist destination in Peru. It was also declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
