Maya Bay is located in Thailand on the island of Koh Phi Phi Leh in the Phi Phi archipelago, in the Andaman Sea. It belongs to the Krabi province of Thailand.
Maya Bay was popularized by the 2000 movie, The Beach (which featured Leonardo DiCaprio in the leading role) and became a very popular diving spot after the release of the film. The film crew bulldozed and re-scaped the natural beach setting of the island to make it more “paradise-like”.
According to the Lonely Planet’s Thailand guidebook, the 2004 tsunami dramatically improved the look of Maya Bay. This was due to the fact that the high waves had cleaned up the beach and removed all the landscaping the film production team had added. Visiting Maya Bay is definitely on my bucket list. It’s just one of those places that I need to check out one day.
This photo of Maya Bay was taken by Paul Quayle (a photographer from the UK) and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 8th of September 2012.
Yesterday a photo featuring Oscar Pistorius at the London 2012 Olympic Games was the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant, feel free to check it out.
