The Milwaukee area (in Wisconsin in the USA) was originally inhabited by various native American tribes. French missionaries and traders first passed through this area in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Alexis Laframboise settled a trading post here in 1785. He was the first European descent resident of this region. Milwaukee was incorporated into the United States in 1846. A great number of German immigrants increased Milwaukee’s population during the 1840s and continued to migrate to the area during the following decades. The German heritage and influence in the Milwaukee area is widespread. The Greater Milwaukee phone book still includes more than 40 pages of names beginning with S-c-h today. Today’s Milwaukee’s population is over 594,000 and there are more than 1.5 million people living in the metropolitan area. This photo of the Milwaukee skyline has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 7th of April 2012.
