Montreal is the 2nd largest city in Canada and the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec. Montreal was founded in 1642 and incorporated as a city in 1832. Today the city has an estimated urban population of 1.9 million and more than 3.8 million people live in the Montreal metropolitan area. The most spoken language at home in the city is French (spoken by more than 50 percent of its population). The official language of the city is actually French (according to its charter).
