A strike broke out at the Lonmin mine near Marikana (just outside Rustenburg in the North West Province) last week. On Thursday (the 16th of August 2012) the South African Police opened fire and a total of 34 workers were killed. The Police tried to disperse a group gathered on the hill outside the mine. Last week, 10 people also died in violent protests at the mine Some people are calling this protest the deadliest protest since Apartheid.
Let’s hope this strike is resolved soon at the Lonmin Mine. We don’t need any more bloodshed in South Africa. In this photo a protester licks his spear outside the Lonmin Mine. It was taken by Siphiwe Simbeko and published by Reuters. This photo has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 18th of August 2012.
