A-Zol REAL sign language interpretation at the Mandela Memorial (Video) Earlier in this week the Nelson Mandela Mermorial service was held at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg. Not only did South African President Jaco Zuma get boo-ed by thousands of people who attended the event, but it turns out the sign language interpreter didn’t know what he was doing and that he’s an impostor (who has behaved similarly before).

The “interpreter” claims that he had a schizophrenic episode and ended up thinking he was capable of doing sign language. 34 year old Thamsanqa Jantjie (the “interpreter) stood shoulder to shoulder with world leaders (including US president Obama) and has admitted that he sometimes reacts violently during schizophrenic attacks.

Jantjie was reportedly being investigated after he defrauded the South African justice department of over R1 million and held a colleague with a brick. The case against him had fallen apart after the main witness was suspended and the investigating officer threatened. He allegedly submitted fraudulent travel invoices in which he claimed over a R1 million for daily trips he never made from Nelspruit to Johannesburg in a BMW he didn’t own and for accommodation he never used. He has apologized for his actions at the Mandela Memorial.

However, this hasn’t stopped the internet from posting all kinds of funny memes and videos seeing the lighter side of this. Jimmy Kimmel Live broadcast this insert earlier in the week. It’s a perfect example of what has been going down online since it came to light that Jantjie wasn’t doing sign language right.
