Great news for fans of skateboarding in South Africa! The Red Bull Manny Manny is coming to Durban this weekend! Today a list of 15 invitees to this year’s competition (which happens to be one of South Africa’s most anticipated skateboarding events) was announced. The list features some of the biggest names in South African skateboard. The event is scheduled to take place on the 9th of June 2012 at the Wave House in Gateway. The 2012 edition of this prestigious event will see skaters from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban showcasing their skills in the hope of winning the first place prize of a trip to New York to contest the Red Bull Manny Mania world amateur finals.
The defending champion, Gavin ‘Moses’ Adams from Cape Town, will be hoping to repeat his 2011 performance and secure his ticket to New York, but he will have his work cut out for him. Last year’s runner-up, Dlamini Dlamini (Durban) and third placed Dada Marumo (Johannesburg) will also be competing. Local skater Khule Ngubane Nia will have local crowd support which should bolster him. And Pretoria skater JP du Preez (who is known to have the temperament and skills to upset the favourites) will also be there. Other names to look out for include George van Blerk, a stalwart of the Durban skating scene and a man that knows how to string together some mad tricks on two wheels, and Cape Town ripper Shuaib Philander.
Centered around the ‘manual’ trick aka, the ‘manny’, the 2012 edition of Red Bull Manny Mania will be the third installment of the contest in South Africa. For those of who did not know, a Manny is essentially a skateboarding ‘wheelie’ – a balancing act that is a must-do in any new skateboarder’s skill set but can be made extremely difficult with limitless combinations.
Judges at this year’s event include skating legend Adrian Day, former competitor Luke Jackson and videographer Jamie O’Brien. The trio will be assisted by NSA representative Riaan van Biljoen. The action starts at 12 noon on Saturday, but it is recommended that spectators and members of the press arrive at 11.30 AM already.
Red Bull Manny Mania has seen thousands of participants put their two wheels to the ground in events across the globe, from America and Europe, to Africa and the Middle East. Who will join the best this year? Who will be the chairman of the United Nations of skate? Only time will tell if you ask me. The Red Bull Manny Mania 2012 provides an opportunity for skaters to battle their way from their neighbourhood streets to the biggest stage in the world.
