Riaan Cruyvwagen needs no introduction in South Africa. He was born in October 1945. For those of who have been living under a rock: He’s a news reader and voice artist and he’s been with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) since 1975. He’s voiced characters for Afrikaans childrens shows like Haas Das Se Nuuskas and Liewe Heksie.
The name Riaan Cruywagen has become synonymous with Afrikaans television news through his lengthy career. Some might say that he’s a South African Ron Burgundy or Walter Cronkite. In the mid-2000s he was the focus of popular culture in South Africa for a time. A number of e-mail and internet jokes originally referring to Chuck Norris and David Hasselhoff were modified by using his name in their place. He’s also appeared in a music video for Afrikaans singer Jan Blohm. And he’s appeared in a few movies (like Leon Schuster’s Short ‘n Sweet and Stander), echoing his long and epic career as a SABC Afrikaans Television newsreader.
Recently, a series of videos has been posted by Dcinmotion1 on YouTube. In this video series, Riaan Cruywagen gives South Africans a few lessons. This first lesson gives us tips on How to “Be Awesome Instead”.
I’m sure that many South Africans will love this clip. I’m actually taking his advice. Instead of being a Moping Marshmellow about Lady Gaga coming to South Africa (something I really couldn’t give a rat’s ass about) I’m going to be Awesome instead. Thanks Riaan.
