Sossusvlei is located in the Southern part of the Namib desert in Namibia. It’s is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes and is located within the boundaries of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color. There’s a high concentration of iron in the sand and the coloration is caused by oxidation. The oldest dunes are a more reddish colour. Some of the dunes are some of the highest ones in the world. Many are above 200 metres high and the highest one (nicknamed “Big Daddy”) is about 380 metres high.
Sossusvlei is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Namibia and the government has done a lot facilitate the tourism in the area. It’s also one of the most photographed places in Sub-Saharan Africa. A few music video, TV adverts and movies have been shot here. To give you an idea, “The Cell” (a 2000 film featuring Jennifer Lopez in one of the leading roles) was shot here. It’s a pretty breathtaking part of Namibia and definitely on my “places to visit before I die” list. Just have a look at today’s Daily Cool Photo below.
