Great news science fiction fans! The long-running TV & movie franchise Stargate will be returning later in 2017 with a new digital show from MGM called Stargate: Origins. The announcement was made at San Diego Comic-Con during a 20th anniversary retrospective on the series Stargate SG-1.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Stargate franchise since the original film was released in 1994 and I’ve watched every single episode of Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe and I’m extremely curious and excited to see what MGM is going to do with Stargate: Origins.
The great part is that it’s a prequel, not a sequel. The sad part is that each episode of Origins will only run for 10 minutes :/ However, I’m glad that I can look forward to getting my science fiction fix later in the year. The first season of 10 episodes will be made available exclusively on a new website called Stargate Command.
According to MGM’s announcement, the website will also be an official destination for all things Stargate, including a “variety of Stargate assets and content from the franchise’s nearly 25-year history.” This is a similar strategy to CBS, who will be releasing Star Trek Discovery as streaming series on CBS All Access later in 2017.
Filming of Stargate: Origins will start later in 2017 an no release date has been announced. The creators have released a teaser trailer to give fans a taste of what’s to come, check it out below:
Even though this is going to be 10 minutes per episode, I’m really looking forward to this. It’s been a while since there has been a proper science fiction show that doesn’t involve Marvel or DC superheroes.
