Tokyo is the defacto capital city and largest city of Japan. Tokyo was originally known as Edo (meaning “estuary”). Edo was a fishing village and it was first fortified by the Edo clan in the late 12th century. Tokyo survived the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake (which left 140,000 dead or missing). Tokyo was also heavily bombed during 1944 and 1945 in the 2nd World War. 75,000 to 200,000 were killed and half of the city destroyed. Tokyo has recovered since then, though. Today over 13 million people live in the central part of Tokyo in Japan. Between 35 and 39 million live in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, making it the world most populous metropolitan area.
