Monday Classic: Boney M – Rivers of Babylon

It’s Monday Classic time! Today’s tune is “Rivers of Babylon” by German disco / techno aficionados Boney M. This song was released in 1978 and is definitely one of my favorite guilty pleasure songs of all time. My relationship with this song is like the Erasure song title from the 1990′s, “I Love to Hate You”.

Boney M Monday Classic: Boney M Rivers of Babylon

Boney M’s “Rivers of Babylon” is not the song’s original version. It’s actually based on Biblical Psalms referring to Jews expressing their yearning for their motherland after the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The “Rivers of Babylon” is also referenced in Rastafarianism. The first popular version of the song was released by the Melodians in 1970. Boney M’s version of the tune was the UK Number one for five weeks in a row and became the second biggest single of all time in the UK. The single sold close to 2 million copies.

Boney M were formed in 1975 in Bonn, West Germany and became extremely popular during the disco era of the late 1970′s. Over the years the group have released 8 studio albums and has seen major changes. The original members were Maizie Williams, Bobby Farrell, Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell. The last time that they performed live was in 2010. “Rivers of Babylon” is extremely catchy, and I’m pretty sure that you’ll be humming the song for the rest of today, just have a listen below.
