I’m a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings films. I actually never read the books (and yes its still one of the things on my bucket list). JRR Tolkien was a genius and a visionary way ahead of his time (in my humble opinion). I was truly impressed by al l 3 the films (which were directed by Peter Jackson). The scenery, storyline, special effects (basically everything) was perfect in all 3 of the films. Most of you probably know that all of the films were shot in New Zealand.
Great news for JRR Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fans is that Peter Jackson is shooting The Hobbit in New Zealand at the moment. The film will be released in 2 parts and both parts are being filmed back to back. I actually read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it (way back in my high school days). I’m really looking forward to seeing how The Hobbit plays out on the silver screen. For those of you who did not know, The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins (a hobbit) who journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. The first installment for The Hobbit will be called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will be released in December 2012. The second installment will be called The Hobbit: There and Back Again and will be released in December 2013. Many members of the cast of the Lord of the Rings trilogy return to the Silver Screen in The Hobbit movies. The first installment will feature appearances by Martin Freeman (who plays the leading role of Bilbo Baggins), Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Graham McTavish, Ken Stott, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugo Weaving, James Nesbitt, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly (of Lost fame), Ian Holm, Elijah Wood and Cate Blanchett.

Jack Sparrow will be back on the Silver Screen in July of 2011. The 4th installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga is on its way. The Action / Adventure / Fantasy film entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is directed by Rob Marshall (who also directed the 2009 film Nine, the 2005 The Memoirs of Geisha and the 2002 film Chicago) and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (who needs no introduction). Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley (who both starred in the first 3 films) are not part of the cast for this film though. Besides Johnny Depp (who plays the leading character) the film will also feature appearances by Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Sam Claflin, Stephen Graham, Yuki Matsuzaki, Gemma Ward, Keith Richards, Richard Griffiths and Judi Dench. In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger TidesJack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on an epic quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too. This film promises to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2011. So far the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise has grossed $2.68 billion worldwide. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has an estimated budget of $200 million. The film has been shot on locations in Hawaii, California and at Pinewood Studios in London. Filming started in June 2010 and ended in November 2010. I’m really looking forward to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3 films. Let’s hope the fact that the film is directed by a different director than the first 3 films does not mess it up.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is set for release in July 2011. It’s the 3rd Transformers film to be released. The film is directed by Michael Bay (who directed both Bad Boys films, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour and The Rock) and produced by Steven Spielberg (who needs no introduction). Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn, Julie White, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, Patrick Dempsey, Alan Tudyk, John Turturro and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley make up the main cast for the upcoming movie. In Transformers: Dark of The Moon the Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the dark side of the Moon and race against the Decepticons to reach it and learn its secrets (which could turn the tide in the Transformers’ final battle). Unfortunately Megan Fox (who is famous for her role as Mikaela Banes in the 2 previous films) will not be part of the cast for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Michael Bay has announced that this will be the last Transformers film that will be made. Let’s hope this film is not the crappiest of the 3 films. Only time will tell if this Adventure / Action / Science Fiction film will suck or not.
