In case you have been living under a rock this past weekend and you don’t know who Felix Baumgartner is by now, here’s the big news: Felix Baumgartner (who is from Austria) became the first human being to break the sound barrier while he was free falling from 39,000 metres in the skies above Roswell, New Mexico in the USA yesterday.
This Red Bull Stratos event was broadcast live on YouTube. Besides falling at Mach 1.24 (1342 km/h) from the sky and breaking the sound barrier, Felix Baumgartner now also holds the altitude record for a manned balloon flight, the record for a parachute jump from the highest altitude and the record for the greatest free fall velocity.
It’s a bit crazy, but this is pretty amazing if you ask me. Unfortunately I did not see this event live on YouTube, but I can’t stop watching he highlights video (embedded below). Felix Baumgartner gives new meaning to the saying “You can do anything that you put your mind to”.
In true internet fashion, there are already a few Felix Baumgartner memes circulating Facebook and Twitter. Vienna is the capital of Austria. It was founded around 500 BC (originally a Celtic settlement). In 15 BC Vienna became a Roman frontier city (named Vindobona), guarding the Roman Empire against Germanic tribes to the North. The city was under Nazi control from 1938 to 1945 (during the 2nd World War). After the war Vienna was divided into sectors by the 4 prevailing nations and supervised by an Allied Commission (just like Berlin). Today more than 1.9 million people live in the Urban area of Vienna and more than 2.2 million people live in the Vienna metro. This photo of the city’s skyline has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 31st of October 2010.
