Bloc Party

On the 5th of October I made my way to Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg to catch Bloc Party at In the City (an event sponsored by Vodacom). Local acts Shadowclub, Yesterday’s Pupil (featuring Tumi Molekane) and International Zef Rap Superstars Die Antwoord were the opening act for the event that attracted over 7,000 music fans. I must admit that I don’t go to live music events in Johannesburg much, but this was one of the better ones that I’ve been to.

Shadowclub kicked off the evening with a bang. These Joburg boytjies never disappoint me with a live performance and Friday night was no exception. I’m also glad that I got to hear a few of their new tracks from their 2nd album. They were followed by Yesteray’s Pupil (featuring Tumi Molekane). Peach van Pletzen and Tumi had the crowd dancing in no time. I must admit that I wasn’t a fan of them a few years ago, but Yesterday’s Pupil has definitely grown on me over the years thanks to excellent live performances like this.

Die Antwoord were up next and amped up the vibe even more. They played one of the most energetic sets that I’ve seen them play live. It was also the first time that I got to see them perform in 2012. I’m not a fan of their music, but one has to admire their live performance skills – Die Antwoord know how to take things to the next level if you ask me.

The main reason why everyone made their way to Johannesburg was to see Bloc Party at In The City. Seeing the amped up crowd in front of the stage (which resembled the RAMFest stage and the Wesley’s Dome Stage at Oppikoppi) cast away all doubt in my mind. Bloc Party played for more than an hour and provided the Jozi crowd with some excellent live entertainment. They were quite energetic on stage and they loved to interact with crowd at the concert. They ended their set with “Helicopter”,  a song that put them on the map on South African radio, much to the delight of the 7,000+ strong crowd at Mary Fitzgerald Square.

Here are some photos that I took of Bloc Party at In The City. You can view all the photos that I took on the night on the Henno Kruger Photography page on Facebook.

I must say that overall Bloc Party at In the City was a well organized event. One of the issues that many people had was the bar cues, it was utterly ridiculous at times. Some folks were waiting in line for an hour to buy beer.  Another issue was slight confusion with media accreditations and photo pit passes, but that was sorted out. I suppose things like this happen, so I don’t blame the organizers for this. I’m pretty sure that they will learn from this and things will be more streamlined at future events.

Mary Fitzgerald Square is an awesome venue for live performances in Johannesburg. You can easily fit over 9,000 people into the square and I don’t see a reason why events like these can not be held here in the future.  It was the first time since 1999 that I was in Newtown and I must say that the state of the neighbourhood has improved significantly. It was a lot more dodgy back then.

Bloc Party Bloc Party Confirmed for Rocking the Daisies 2012!Great news for fans of Indie music in South Africa! Internationally acclaimed Indie rock legends Bloc Party have been confirmed to be international headliner at the 2012 edition of the Rocking the Daisies festival in the Western Cape! This universally respected band has already headlined some of the world’s most famous festivals and will be adding Rocking the Daisies to its very impressive list (which includes the O2 Academy, Leeds and Reading Festivals, T in the Park, Glastonbury and V Fest. South Africa now has the chance to be blown away by one of the best live acts in the world on Saturday the 6th of October 2012 at Rocking the Daisies. For those of you who did not know, the festival takes place at the Cloof Wine Estate near Darling in the Western Cape.

Just less than a year ago a big question markloomed over whether new music would ever emerge from Bloc Party. The band went on a hiatus in October 2009 to focus on side projects, and reunited in September 2011. In May 2012 the band announced via their website that their fourth album, Four would be released on the 20th of August 2012.

In February 2005 the band released their debut album Silent Alarm. It was critically acclaimed and was named ‘Indie Album of the Year’ at the 2006 PLUG Awards and NME Album of the year (which both honour indie music). That same year the record went platinum – Bloc Party sold two million albums worldwide. Bloc Party now return with their strongest, most vital statement to date in their triumphant new album Four.

FYI: Bloc Party’s members are Kele Okereke, Russell Lissack, Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong. The band reunited, prompted by a creative impetus inspired by a dramatic year in world events, as well as a shared desire to rekindle their singular musical kinship.

The new album presents a band in the fullest sense of the word: lean, hungry, spirited and uncompromising, armed with a collection of songs as powerful and anthemic as they’ve ever penned, as well as some of their most hard-hitting and visceral recordings to date! Rocking The Daisies fans will get to watch this all unfold on the main stage at the festival in 2012! To quote Kele Okereke “The record is the sound of four people in a room, loving what they do and doing it to the best of their ability. It is the sound that only the four of us could make, and I am prouder of it than any record we have ever made”.

I must admit I’m not that familiar with Bloc Party’s music. Only one single that I know of has been playlisted on Tuks FM in Pretoria before. It would be interesting to see them live though. It’s also great that more and more international acts are making their way down South. At the rate that internationals are being announced at the moment we could definitely expect more of them in 2012.

To give you an idea of their sound, check out this video in which they perform their hit single “The Prayer” at Rock Am Ring in Germany in 2009 below:

If you are thinking of going to Rocking the Daisies this year: The festival will take place from the 4th to the 7th of October 2012 on on the Cloof Wine estate in Darling. Get your tickets now via Webtickets. You can also check out the Rocking The Daisies website, Rocking the Daisies on Facebook or @rockingthedaisy on Twitter for more information about the festival.
