Pyongyang, North Korea

For those of you who did not know, Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea. Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River and according to the 2008 North Korean population census the city has a population of about 3.2 million people.

It is said that Pyongang was founded in 1122 BC, which probably makes it one of the oldest cities still existing today in South East Asia. The city was completely redesigned after the Korean War (which happened between 1950 and 1953). Pyongyang also has regular international rail services to Beijing and Moscow. A journey to Beijing takes about 25 hours and 25 minutes and a journey to Moscow takes 6 days.

This photo features Pyongyang, North Korea during a morning rainstorm. The photo was taken by David Guttenfelder for Associated Press and has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 26th of September 2012.

Durban Skyline

For those of you who did not know, Durban is the 3rd largest city in South Africa (behind Johannesburg and Cape Town). More than 3.5 million people live in the Durban metropolitan area.

I haven’t been to Durban since 2004. I think I need to rectify this in the near future. I bet the city has changed a lot since my last visit. There seems to be much more to Durban than the beach and the hot and humid summers.

Apparently the new Durban International Airport (near La Lucia) is something to check out. Maybe I should fly down to Durban one weekend and go check it out. And there’s also the Moses Mabhida stadium and Kings Park – I’ve never been there either. I better get my arse into gear.

This photo of the Durban Skyline has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 2nd of September 2012.

Aerial Photo of Barcelona

Barcelona is definitely of the cities in Europe that I want to visit one day. It is said that the area where the city is today was first settled in 15 BC. Quite impressive if you ask me.

Today Barcelona is the second biggest city in Spain behind Madrid with a population of more than 5 million people. The city hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1992. The city is located on the North East coast of the Iberian Peninsula, facing the Mediterranean Sea.

Aldas Kirvaitis took this Aerial Photo of Barcelona and posted it on the popular photo sharing website Flickr. It’s an absolutely stunning photo of the city if you ask me. This photo has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 25th of August 2012.
