Dubai is a city located in the United Arab Emirates. The earliest recorded mention of Dubai is in 1095, and the earliest settlement known as Dubai town dates from 1799. Dubai was formally established in the early 19th century by the Al Abu Falasa clan of Bani Yas, and it remained under clan control when the United Kingdom assumed the protection of Dubai in 1892. Oil was discovered in the region in 1966. This led to the city growing by 300% and caused an influx of foreigners. I passed through this city in 2004 on the way to London. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates) is officially the world’s tallest building since it opened on the 4th of January 2010. The building is 828 meters (2,717 feet) high and has 160 habitable floors. The Burj Khalifa as a floor space are of over 460,000 square meters (5,000,000 square feet). Construction on the skyscraper started in 2004 and was finished by October 2009. The Burj Khalifa also holds the record for the tallest structure ever built, the tallest extant structure, the tallest freestanding structure and the building with the most floors. The Burj Khalifa can also brag with the fact that it has the world’s fastest elevators (travelling at 64 kilometers and hour). The building also houses the world’s highest swimming (on its 76th floor) and the world’s highest mosque (on it’s 158th floor). The Burj Khalifa truly is a architectural marvel.
