Mr Cat and The Jackal

Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother Photos (In Black and White)In 2011 I made my way to Oppikoppi Unknown Brother. It was the 13th Oppikoppi festival that I attended since 1998 (including 3 Easter Oppikoppis). My friends and I  were there from the Thursday to the Monday morning and it was an awesome tune-packed, dust-infested and booze-enhanced weekend in the Limpopo bushveld. It was also the first time that I received media accreditation for an Oppikoppi festival.

There were some truly great moments during last year’s festival. Isochronous, Ef-El, Fuzigish and Southern Gypsey Queen gave the weekend a kickstart on the main stage on the Friday night. Saturday was chock-a-block full with memorable performances by The December Streets, Lise Chris Band, Harpdog Frost (Albert Frost and Rob Nagel), Mr Cat and the Jackal, Matthew van der Want & Chris Letcher, Holiday Murray, Karen Zoid, Bittereinder, Jax Panik, Not My Dog, Desmond & the Tutu’s, Gazelle, Zebra and Giraffe and Van Coke Kartel. And Sunday was just the cherry on the cake, spawning awesomeness with performances by Die Tuindwergies, Wrestlerish, Dance You’re On Fire, Dan Patlansky, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Tumi and the Volume, David Kramer and friends, The Used (from the USA), Die Antwoord and Sum 41 (from Canada). Quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

Check out these 52 Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother photos that I took last year. I’m pretty sure that will bring back some rad memories for all of you who attended Oppikoppi Unknown Brother

Now you’re probably feeling up for Oppikoppi 2012 Sweet Thing, right? Check out this blog post on Gevaaalik.com featuring some Oppikoppi Tips (Warning, it’s in Afrikaans). Between 16,000 and 17,000 tickets have been sold for Oppikoppi Sweet Thing so far. A record attendance is expected for the festival this year. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, you should really move your behind and get to it. Tickets are bound to sell out (like they have in 2010 and2011). To get your ticket to South Africa‘s premier music festival, head on over to the Standard Bank youth portal for your discounted R600 tickets. They supplement each ticket for the fans and you DO NOT have to be a Standard Bank client to make use of this service. You can also obtain tickets on the Oppikoppi Festival Facebook page for R700 or for R750 from Ticketbreak.

Yesterday I made my way to Arcade Empire (in Pretoria East) to catch the MK Awards After Party for 2012. Gates already opened at 3 PM, but we only got there after 5 PM. After enjoying a bucket or two of Black Label I made my way to the stage (which was set up in the parking lot) to catch Mr Cat and the Jackal’s performance. This Cape town based act burst onto the scene in 2011. I had the privilege of seeing them perform 5 or 6 times last year. They seem to be getting better and better at performing live every time I see them. For those of you who did not know, Mr Cat and the Jackal were named as one of the 2012 MK Award Winners on Friday, scooping up the award for Best SFX. I snapped this photo of Mr Cat and Jackal yesterday and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 25th of March 2012.

2012 MK Award Winners

in Award Ceremonies

Bittereinder on stage @ MK Awards 2012 300x200 2012 MK Award WinnersLast night the capital city was abuzz with a lot of chatter about the 2012 MK Awards (especially on the #MKAwards hashtag on Twitter). I had the privilege to be on the guest list for the Award Ceremony this year. @BaasDeBeer @StephanieJMPta and @Sarinatjie arrived at the State Theatre (which is located in Pretoria Central) just after 6 PM. After getting our tickets for the ceremony, we made our way to the bar (which was giving out copious amounts of Free Red Heart Rum). To list every single person that we bumped into on the night would be impossible – almost every person that contributes to the SA Music scene in some or other way was there – and endless list of artists, bloggers, photographers, radio personalities, TV personalities, journalists, producers, etc. It was especially good to see my good Twitter friend @texxonfire (who had made the trip all the way from Cape Town for the event).

After gobbling down a few Red Hearts and bumping into almost every person involved in the Pretoria music scene we made our way into the auditorium for the MK Awards ceremony at about 8:30 PM. The main host for the ceremony was Afrikaans rapper Jack Parow. During the course of the night the Pretoria crowd were treated to performances by Double Adapter, Goodluck (featuring Tamara Dey from Flash Republic), Moses Metroman, Van Coke Kartel (which also featured Zebra and Giraffe), Bittereinder, Mr Cat and The Jackal, Die Heuwels Fantasties (featuring Inge Beckman from Lark) and Jack Parow (featuring Gazelle).

Gazelle and Jack Parow on stage @ MK Awards 2012 200x300 2012 MK Award WinnersIt was awesome experiencing quirks from all the co-presenters for the awards (like Natalie Roos, Jean Jordaan, Elma Smit, Jon Savage, Arno Carstens, Francois van Coke, etc). The funniest quirk on stage came from Tumi Molekane (who made a joke him thinking that MK was a reference to Umkhonto we Sizwe when he first heard about it).

There were a few surprises in this year’s MK Awards. This is a list of the 2012 MK Awards Winners:

  • Best Video: Locnville – Stars Above You. Directed by Tristan Holmes
  • Best Newcomer: Moses Metro Man – Huigelaar
  • Best Group: Van Coke Kartel – Ondier Kom
  • Best International Hit: Adele – Rolling In The Deep
  • Best SFX: Mr Cat and The Jackal – Bad Man He Comin’
  • Best Dance: Jax Panik – Get Up
  • Best Rock: Van Coke Kartel – Vir Almal
  • Best Indie: Dance You’re On Fire – Boxes Of Tigers
  • Best Hipster: Jack Parow – Byellville
  • Best Radio Hit: MFM – Jax Panik / Dinosaur
  • Best Live Act: Van Coke Kartel

Mr Cat and the Jackal on stage @ MK Awards 2012 300x200 2012 MK Award WinnersI would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners in this year’s MK Awards. I have to be honest though, I’m not a huge fan of Locnville, but their video was worthy of the Best Video Award. I’m a bit sad that Tuks FM didn’t walk away with the Best Radio Hit Award (but I also realize that Jax Panik had pushed for votes on Twitter and Facebook in the last 3 days of voting and secured the award for MFM). I’m also surprised that Shadowclub didn’t win any awards. I’m particularly glad that Van Coke Kartel walked away with 3 Awards (and a brand new Hyundai van) on the evening – they are one of the most hard-working acts in South Africa. I’m also glad that Dance You’re On Fire finally got the recommendation they deserve. I’m sure we’re going to see awesome things from these okes in the future.

You can basically say that I have a bit of mixed emotions for the winners list of the 2012 MK Awards, so let’s leave it at that. Nonetheless, it was an awesome experience. It’s hard to believe that I watched this ceremony on television in 2010 and now I actually attended it. I want to take this opportunity to thank Gabbi Brondani and all the organizers of the MK Awards for the invite to attend this event this year. I hope I’ll see you again in 2013.
