Dubai was incorporated as a town in 1833 and gained independence from the UK in 1971. Dubai was founded by Rashid bin saeed Al Maktoum. Over the last century the city has grown significantly to be a cosmopolitan metropolis that has grown steadily to become a global city and a business and cultural hub of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. Today it’s the largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates with a population of 2.1 million.
Dubai has become symbolic for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings (like the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa) and other ambitious development projects like man-made islands, hotels, and some of the largest shopping malls in the region and in the world. I was at Dubai International Airport in 2004 and I must say that it was one of the most impressive places that I’ve been to. With no less than 45 gates it’s probably the biggest airport that I’ve been to.
Today’s Daily Cool Photo features the Dubai Skyline. I wouldn’t mind re-visiting this city to explore it some more, maybe I’ll be able to experience this for myself.
So, have you been to Dubai? Is it on your list of places to visit in the world or not? Leave a comment and let me know what your thoughts are. Feedback is appreciated and welcome here.
