In February 2010 my dad and I went to watch the Bulls take on the Brumbies (from Canberra in Australia) at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria. The match was played in the 2nd round of the 2010 Super 14 Rugby tournament. The Bulls were the better team on the day, beating the Brumbies by 50 points to 32. The Bulls scored 5 tries in the match (2 were scored by flyhalf Morne Steyn and 1 each by Fourie Du Preez, Wynand Olivier and Gerhard van den Heever). Ricky Elsom, George Smith and Pat McCabe scored the Brumbies’ 3 tries in the match. Only 31,000 people attended the match. Being a Bulls supporter I must say that the team performed better than I expected they would in the match. The Bulls went on to win the 2010 Super 14 final at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. I snapped this photo of the Brumbies and the Bulls on the field on that day and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 5th of May 2011.

Yesterday a photo featuring the Bulls vs Crusaders @ Orlando Stadium 2010 was the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant. About a year ago (on the 22nd of May 2010) my dad and I made our way to Orlando Stadium in Soweto (just South of Johannesburg) to watch the 2010 Super 14 semi-final match between the Crusaders (from New Zealand) and the Bulls. We used the park and ride bus service from Centurion to get there and back. It was my first time ever in Soweto. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric. The Bulls completely outplayed the New Zealanders, beating them by 39 points to 24 (thanks to tries by Pierre Spies, Zane Kirchner and Fourie Du Preez). The Bulls went on to become the 2010 Super 14 champions. I snapped this photo in the stadium last year and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 4th of May 2011.

Rugby fans in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are patiently waiting for the start of the 2011 Super Rugby season. The Bulls are the defending Super 14 champions at the moment. They beat the Stormers in May 2010 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto to win their 3rd Super Rugby title. The Super 14 tournament has been renamed to the Super 15, the main reason being the addition of a 5th Australian team (the Melbourne Rebels) to the competition. The format of the competition has also been changed and the amount of matches have been increased from 94 to 124. The Super 15 will have more local derbies and will include an extended finals series. From now on the tournament will run until July in a Rugby World cup year and until August in non-World Cup years. Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will each host at least 40 matches. The Super 15 will have 3 pools or geographic conferences (each containing 5 teams). Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will each host one pool. The 3-week finals series will be involving 6 teams (as opposed to the current 2-week playoffs for 4 teams). At the end of the regular season matches, the top team in each conference will qualify for the finals. The other 3 teams to qualify will be the sides with the most number of competition points (regardless in which Conference they are based). The Conference winners are also ensured of a home finals match. Therefore, at least one finals match will be played in each country each year.

Please note that these dates, times and venues are subject to change. The schedule for the 3 week final matches will be posted closer to the team in 2011. It looks like the Super 15 is going to be a lot tougher than any Super rugby tournaments before it. Let’s hope this new format breeds some brilliant competition, sportsmanship and some excellent Rugby.
