Surfer in Fiji

For those of you who did not know, Fiji is on the international date line. It’s the first place on planet Earth where the day officially breaks. Fiji is about 2,000 km North East of New Zealand’s North Island. It sounds like an island paradise in the middle of nowhere if you ask me. An estimated 849,000 people are currently living on the islands that Fiji is comprised of.

Fiji is definitely is definitely on the list of islands that I’d like to visit one day. In this photo by Lucia Griggi a surfer in Fiji duck dives his board to clear the rolling waves at an outer reef at Cloudbreak. I don’t think that I’ll ever be a surfer in Fiji though – that looks dangerous. This photo was submitted to the 2012 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest (and with good reason). It’s a bloody awesome shot, nuff said.  This photo has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 17th of August 2012.

Beachwatch 300x101 Mobile Surfs App in Cape TownI’m a Vaalie, not a surfer at all, but I recognize something useful when I see it or hear about. In Cape Town’s notoriously temperamental climate, planning that perfect day enjoying the city’s finest surf spots is a tricky exercise in guesswork, with surf and weather conditions often differing substantially from place to place. BeachWatch is an exciting new mobile phone application from iSee Software Solutions (a company based in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape) and it ensures that the perfect wave is only a click away, bringing the best breaks directly to users’ mobile handsets in real time.

20 “internet protocol” digital cameras (imported from either Germany or China) have been mounted at strategic elevated positions which move around to offer a range of different angled shots of the beaches. BeachWatch provides live feeds from the following surfing hotspots: Bikini Beach, Strand, Melkbosstrand, Table View, Clifton, Big Bay, Hout Bay, Milnerton,
Fish Hoek, Noordhoek, Long Beach, Kommetjie, Outer Kom, Kommetjie, Kalk Bay, Muizenberg and Misty Cliffs.

Watersports enthusiasts can now monitor surf conditions on-the-go, utilizing the application’s high-quality, live video streams for beaches throughout the Cape Peninsula. The application offers strategically placed camera feeds at all of the city’s top surfing hotspots, providing custom views of well-known wave breaks from Melkbosstrand to Kommetjie. The application is free and works across the vast majority of handsets, enabling almost anyone to monitor quality camera feeds without having to access a computer or smartphone device.

Johann Stegmann, CEO of iSee Software Solutions, believes that BeachWatch will revolutionize local surf culture, “Wave hunters now have a one-stop solution to reduce both time and hassle, and can now easily plan their watersports activities around the information provided by the BeachWatch service. Never before has a local solution been provided that supplies real time information on-the-go, and we strongly believe that this application will be invaluable to all watersports aficionados.”

The BeachWatch surf cams are currently available exclusively in Cape Town and surrounds, but will be rolled out to other popular South African surfing destinations in the coming months.

BeachWatch is a cross-platform application, available across the majority of mobile handsets, with an Android Application also available for download. There’s now no excuse for watersports enthusiasts of every kind to miss that perfect wave. To download the BeachWatch application, please visit http://www.beachwatch.co.za or follow BeachWatch South Africa on Facebook.
