The December Streets

JD Music Logo Cropped Black 350x260 Brace Yourself for Park Acoustics on 24 March 2013!Brace Yourself! On Sunday the 24th of March 2013 Park Acoustics in association with Jack Daniel’s presents Gazelle, The December Streets, Ryno Velvet, Moving House, Shaun Jacobs and much more. Gates open at 10 AM on the day.

I have to admit that I’m not familiar with Ryno Velvet, Shaun Jacobs and Moving House, but I’m always game for discovering new and exciting SA Music. From what I could gather, Ryno Velvet is a rock artist from Cape Town, Shaun Jacobs is a modelic rock artist from Johannesburg and Moving House is an Alternative / Pop/ Electro outfit comprised of Andre Montgomery Piennaar (Ashtray Electric) and Rob Davidson and from Cape Town.

The December Streets have been taking SA Music by storm since late 2010. They won the KFC Sessions contest in that year and have been making waves in the musical landscape since then. These Pretoria boys know how to get a party started and they’re young enough to be around for many years to come.

Gazelle needs no introduction. This unique outfit featuring Xander Ferreira and DJ Invizable have been around since 2008. Their modern traditional crossover genre called Limpop has left a permanent mark on the SA Music Scene. They are also renowned for their awesome live performances. If you have not seem them live take it from me: You won’t be disappointed.

Park Acoustics 24 March 2013 Brace Yourself for Park Acoustics on 24 March 2013!

As usual Hotbox Express will be offering a bus shuttle service during the day. The departure station is at the bottom of the hill at the Voortrekker Monument picnic parking area. The shuttle will leave every 10 minutes from 10 AM to 3 PM. It will break for 40 min and will start again at 15:40 for the descent. The last bus down the hill will be at 19:00.

The  arts and culture initiative with the aim to provide all kinds of creative’s with a platform to feature their art, design, photography, graffiti, music, film, animation, poetry, dance, fashion, architecture and anything else that qualifies as creative and original will also be at Park Acoustics again. Makes sure that you check out the PostBox stand on the day.

Due to space constraints and health & safety to others the organizers of Park Acoustics had to stop people from bringing in their own braai, gas and potjie equipment to the venue. Park Acoustics and Braaiboy joined forces a few months ago and now provide attendees with a professional braai facility all under the watchful eye of Braaiboy. He will make sure that the fire is always hot, offer braaing tips and some braai recipes. Bring some meat along and have some fun in the sun with Braaiboy. He’s been braai-ing every day for almost four years, so he knows what he’s doing.

And let’s not forget about Sunset Comedy Stage at Park Acoustics. Laughing your arse off is an awesome way to end a fun day in the sun. This edition will feature Nina Hastie, Donovan Goliath and Jason Goliath.

Take a look at the video (what was posted on Wat Kyk Jy) about the last edition of Park Acoustics (to give you an idea of the vibe):

Tickets to this edition of Park Acoustics cost R70 online (via the Park Acoustics website) or R80 at the gate. Children under 6 can enter for free. It will also cost you R10 per vehicle to enter the Voortekker Monument Nature Reserve on the day. There will be bar facilities and food stalls available on the day. Remember: Leave your weapons, illegal substances, domestic animals  and bad vibes at home.  For more information, check out the Facebook Event Page. You can also follow @parkacoustics on Twitter or keep a watchful eye on the Park Acoustics Facebook page for updates.

See You There! Spread the word about the next Park Acoustics! Share this article with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. Remember: Sharing is Caring.

Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother Photos (In Black and White)In 2011 I made my way to Oppikoppi Unknown Brother. It was the 13th Oppikoppi festival that I attended since 1998 (including 3 Easter Oppikoppis). My friends and I  were there from the Thursday to the Monday morning and it was an awesome tune-packed, dust-infested and booze-enhanced weekend in the Limpopo bushveld. It was also the first time that I received media accreditation for an Oppikoppi festival.

There were some truly great moments during last year’s festival. Isochronous, Ef-El, Fuzigish and Southern Gypsey Queen gave the weekend a kickstart on the main stage on the Friday night. Saturday was chock-a-block full with memorable performances by The December Streets, Lise Chris Band, Harpdog Frost (Albert Frost and Rob Nagel), Mr Cat and the Jackal, Matthew van der Want & Chris Letcher, Holiday Murray, Karen Zoid, Bittereinder, Jax Panik, Not My Dog, Desmond & the Tutu’s, Gazelle, Zebra and Giraffe and Van Coke Kartel. And Sunday was just the cherry on the cake, spawning awesomeness with performances by Die Tuindwergies, Wrestlerish, Dance You’re On Fire, Dan Patlansky, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Tumi and the Volume, David Kramer and friends, The Used (from the USA), Die Antwoord and Sum 41 (from Canada). Quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

Check out these 52 Oppikoppi 2011 Unknown Brother photos that I took last year. I’m pretty sure that will bring back some rad memories for all of you who attended Oppikoppi Unknown Brother

Now you’re probably feeling up for Oppikoppi 2012 Sweet Thing, right? Check out this blog post on Gevaaalik.com featuring some Oppikoppi Tips (Warning, it’s in Afrikaans). You might also want to check out the Oppikoppi Sweet Thing Line-Up Times, the Oppikoppi Sweet Thing Map, the Oppikoppi Sweet Thing Rules, 5 Stories from Oppikoppi Festivals of Yesteryear, Some Oppikoppi Advice for Geeks from Sheldon Cooper, Some Oppikoppi Advice from Boromir and Some Survival Tips for Oppikoppi Sweet Thing (Sourced from Social Media). If you want the bulk of it all, listen to this podcast on SA Music Zone (also in Afrikaans). I trust that you will find some useful information out of all of these links.

Between 16,000 and 17,000 tickets have been sold for Oppikoppi Sweet Thing so far. A record attendance is expected for the festival this year. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, you should really move your behind and get to it. Tickets are bound to sell out (like they have in 2010 and2011). To get your ticket to South Africa‘s premier music festival, head on over to the Standard Bank youth portal for your discounted R600 tickets. They supplement each ticket for the fans and you DO NOT have to be a Standard Bank client to make use of this service. You can also obtain tickets on the Oppikoppi Festival Facebook page for R700 or for R750 from Ticketbreak.

The past weekend I made my way down to the Western Cape to attend the Up The Creek Music Festival (near Swellendam). On Thursday night Pretoria based band The December Streets made their way onto the BOS Ice Tea stage to kick off the weekend’s jam-packed musical schedule. I was particularly impressed with their cover version of the Mumford and Sons song Little Lion Man (although it wasn’t the first time that I heard them play it). It seems that these boys only get better at live performances every time I see them play. The December Streets have come a long way since they won the 2010 KFC Sessions Finals in Pretoria. In snapped this close up shot of lead vocalist Tristan Coetzee and Waldo Boshoff (who plays the trumpet in the band) and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 8th of February 2012. For more photos from Up The Creek 2012, check out the Henno Kruger Photography Facebook page.
