Living in South Africa I sometimes forget that there’s a whole world out there. The Chinese community celebrate Lunar New Year in South Africa, but it did not get much attention since they are a minority. Fact is, Lunar New Year is the biggest holiday on the Chinese calendar and widely celebrated by millions of people around the globe annually.
For the 2012 celebrations, Chinese people sent fireworks into the Beijing sky to mark the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. In Malaysia, the local Chinese population visited ancient temples to pray for a year of prosperity. Families also opened up their homes to troupes performing traditional lion and dragon dances (which are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune). In the Philippines Chinese-Filipinos traveled to a nearby Catholic shrine and offered prayers with incense sticks, in a blend of Hispanic and Chinese traditions. In the Fillipino capital city of Manila photographer Noel Cetis caught this man breathing fire during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
