Otterlake Easter Festival 720x836 Brace Yourself for the Otterlake Easter Festival!Otterlake Easter Festival is around the corner. The first edition of this very promising festival will be held from the 28th of March to the 31st of March 2013 at Plot 26, Kameelfontein. The venue is close to Roodeplaat Dam (just North of Pretoria).

The festival kicks off on the 28th of March at 7 PM. The rest of the weekend the artists will start playing a 2 PM daily. Gates for the event will open daily from 12 noon. An extra highlight on Saturday evening will be the 2nd traditional Easter Fire Celebration.

Festival goers are invited to spend a magical “Rock for Conservation” weekend at Otterlake Easter Festival. The festival takes place in serene surroundings and festival goers will be able to listen to fantastic music, enjoy meals from an abundance of food stalls, spoil themselves by indulging in the wonderful German cuisine served at the Otterlake Restaurant, enjoy two main bars and various mobile bars.

Camping facilities with toilets & hot showers available for the entire weekend and firewood & ice will be on sale. Besides the fact that you’ll be enjoying the experience of a lifetime you’ll also be contributing towards a very worthy cause: the protection of our country’s Rhinos. Otterlake Easter Festival is also ‘kiddie friendly’ with jumping castles and adult supervised obstacle courses along the river bank. Children under 14 will be able to get in for free. Remember your ID’s please.

The following artists have been confirmed so far for the festival: The Black Cat Bones, Jack Hammer, The Smoking Mojos, Valiant Swart, Howlin Shibanski, Wolfgang Marrow, Aidan Martin, Hoot & Anny, The Dying Breed, The Fake Leather Blues Band, Piet Botha, The Stellas, Die See, Cortina Whiplash, Mrs. B, Guns & Posers, Shotgun Tori, Juggernaught, Kabaal, Sun of the Gun, Crystal Park & The Stray Natives.

Otter Camp Lodge is the festival campers dream. You hire a tent, mattress and bedding from the organizers and they will set it up for you. All you have to do is turn up. Start the party earlier. Get home faster. Save the muscles and lugging for more important things like food, drinks and party clothes. They offer four man tents that sleep two so you can comfortably stand upright and have enough space to be organized. Better still tell all your friends if you want your tents booked together. Make this of this option and you’ll receive a four man pre-pitched tent that sleeps two, two high density and comfortable foam mattresses, bed sheets, covered pillows, bed covers and blankets, a LED lantern, a small carpet, personalized tent number with occupants names, a tent lock and lanyard for key. All this for only R2000 per tent for 28 – 31 March 2013.

Tickets for the event cost only R300 and can be bought on the Otterlake Easter Festival Website.  Buy your weekend ticket for the Otterlake Easter Festival online and you will automatically be entered into a draw to win 1 of 4 double tickets to two sister festivals (the FORR festival in Mozambique and the Mieliepop festival in Mpumalanga). In other words, for only R300 you could possibly attend Otterlake Easter Festival, FORR and Mieliepop this year. Winners will be announced on Thursday 28 March. Terms and conditions apply.

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I’m definitely considering packing my festival shoes and my camera to spend an awesome weekend at this festival. Hope I’ll see you there.

In October 2011 I made my way to the Mieliepop Kick-off Festival at Tolderia Holiday Resort (just outside Lothair in Mpumalanga). We only arrived at the venue late on the Friday night, but that doesn’t mean that we didn’t have fun. On the Saturday night I made my way to the stage area to catch Afrikaans music legend Valiant Swart on stage. He played one of his most memorable sets that I had seen in recent times. Valiant Swart proved why he has been in the SA Music industry for more than 20 years. 5 words describe him for me: “This man is a legend”. Nuff said. I snapped this photo of Valiant Swart performing at Mieliepop 2011 and it has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 10th of January 2011.

Valiant Swart Poster from 1996

Valiant Swart Poster from 1996 360x480 Valiant Swart Poster from 1996I left Pretoria for a bit in December 2011. I made my way to my parent’s place in Limpopo for a well-deserved rest period. My dad had raided my old room earlier in the year and left 3 plastic files filled with old-school stuff in it. I found a Pure Platinum (an old club in Hatfield that used to be where Good 4 Fellas was) advertising flyer showing specials for cheap drinks (R3 a beer and R1 tequila). I also found an old article that I snail mailed to Top 40 magazine in 1995. But the thing that mostly caught my eye was this poster advertising a Valiant Swart gig at Shaft night club in Lynnwood in November 1996. Man, that brought back memories. I still remember the R1 beer specials at Shaft (every year when they turned a year older). Shaft used to be across the road from the UP Mens hostels (close to Varsity Bakery). If I can recall correctly Piet Botha’s band Jack Hammer used to join Valiant Swart as a support act back in those days. If you’re part of my generation and used to live in Pretoria back then, you’ll probably remember Shaft. This photo has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 4th of January 2012.
