Tunis is the largest and capital city of Tunisia (in North Africa). More than 1.2 million people live in the urban area of Tunis and more than 3.9 million people live in the Tunis metropolitan area today. Some sources date the establishment of the town of Tunis back to the 4th century BC. Tunis is located in North-Eastern Tunisia on the Lake of Tunis and is connected to the Mediterranean sea’s Gulf of Tunis by a canal which terminates at the port of La Goulette / Halq al Wadi. The ancient city of Carthage is located just North of Tunis along the coastal part. Tunis has been the capital of Tunisia since 1159.
