Van Coke Kartel – Maniac

A while ago I featured the song Maniac by Michael Sembelo (which gained fame for being on the Flashdance soundtrack in 1984). I also mentioned in the post that South African rockers Van Coke Kartel recorded a cover of this song in 2010. Well, the video for the Van Coke Kartel version premiered on the South African Music Channel MK last night. This version of Maniac has been released on the latest Van Coke Kartel album Skop, Skiet en Donner. This is one of the English songs on the album, but the majority of the songs on the album are in Afrikaans. Skop, Skiet en Donner is definately one of the best albums to be released by a South African artist so far this year. Definately worth listening to. The whole album can be bought off the Rhythm Music Store website for R84.

Van Coke Kartel are currently promoting their new album with a tour. They will be playing at Lemon ‘n’ Lime in Oudtshoorn (their only show at the KKNK) on the 3rd of April, at Die Mystic Boer in Bloemfontein on the 14th of April, at Bourbon Street in Potchefstroom on the 15th of April, at The Woods in Newtown, Johannesburg on the 16th of April, at Hotbox Studios in Hatfield, Pretoria (with Oorlog Frankenstein and Yesterday’s Pupil) on the 17th of April, at Steak ‘n Ale in Lyttelton, Pretoria on the 20th of April and at Cool Runnings at Victory Park Shopping Center in Johannesburg on the 21st of April. Get your butt down to one of these gigs, Van Coke Kartel are definately one of the best South African live acts.
