World War II Normandy Landing Photo

The 2nd World War was the bloodiest war in history. According to estimates more than 40 million people were killed in the war. The 2nd World War broke out in September 1939 and ended in 1945. The USA entered the war in late 1941 after their naval base at Pearl Harbour was the focus of a sneak attack by the Japanese. On the 6th of June 1944 the Allied forces launched a large scale invasion of Normandy (on the French coast). This photo was taken on that day and shows Allied forces disemarked their landing craft and heading off to almost certain death on the beach at Normandy. This photo has been selected as the Daily Cool Photo on Running Wolf’s Rant for the 30th of November 2010.
