Yelawolf confirmed for Oppikoppi 2016

On Friday last week, Hilltop Live announced powerful rap voice Yelawolf as the second International headlining act for Oppikoppi 2016.

Yelawolf (who hails from Alabama in the USA) draws influences from all over the map without sounding much like anyone else. This is the reason he had a major record deal with Interscope Records 3 months after popping onto everyone’s radar. Later that year, the tape was re-released as Trunk Muzik 0-60, and Rolling Stone praised him as “an MC whose liquid flow breathes life into genre clichés.” In January 2011, he signed to Eminem’s Shady Records and his fan base grew even more rapidly.

His latest album Love Story features the single, Till It’s Gone. It’s a driving barn burner of a song elevated by Wolf’s melodically sung hook. Radio friendly without sacrificing its soul, it’s an undeniable smash that’s in line with the country’s recent obsession with the culture of rural American life. In fact, Till It’s Gone premiered last September on the wildly popular FX drama series Sons of Anarchy.

Being mentioned in the same sentences as Eminem and being signed to his label, having collaborated on “Best Friend”, shows that this is meaningful hip hop. In the same breath it should also be said that Yelawolf has made an EP with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, titled Psycho White. He describes it best on Out Of Control:  “I’m too rock for hip-hopToo hip-hop for rock n’ roll, I’m too city for rednecks, And I’m too country for city folks, but I don’t give a fuck what they want from me, I can only give ’em what I know.”

To be dead honest, I’ve never heard of Yelawolf, but I definitely want to hear what he’s going to offer music fans Oppikoppi this year. Have a listen to “Till It’s Gone” below:

I have to admit that it’s not entirely my cup of tea, but Yelawolf seems to be extremely talented in his genre, so I’m getting very excited about watching him perform at this year’s festival.

Excited? General Admission tickets cost R850. Get yours now! Otherwise you’ll be paying R950 for a late ticket (which will cost R950) and do take note that NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE FESTIVAL GATE.
