1980s South African Volkswagen Advert


Apart from 2 Datsuns (that both my parents drove in the 1980s) the family car has always a Volkswagen. I remember my dad being heavily against buying a German car in the late 1980s (after being completely used to a Japanese one for some time). Our family got our first Volkswagen Jetta in 1987 and since then we’ve been a huge fan of the German automaker. I dug up this old South African advert from the 1980s on YouTube for Volkswagen and got a little nostalgic in the process.

Some familiar faces are in this advert (including South African performer David Kramer). This truly brings back memories. Volkswagen is one of the world’s largest motoring manufacturers. The company was founded in 1937 by the National Socialist trade union German Labour Front (or Deutsche Arbeitsfront). The company has come a long way since then. Today it’s the 2nd most popular car brand in South Africa (behind Toyota and ahead of BMW).
