Wondering which Netflix Originals you should check out? Keep on reading to get my recommendations. Before I get too excited, one has to note that Netflix can be very hit and miss. What the show thinks is a sure hitter is usually a slumbering show, and what they put no faith in is an instant hit.
So, I’m here to help them, and you, out by picking out the best options for you for 2022. Could we see a vast media empire emerging here? Netflix has already produced games on their platforms with tie-ins to popular shows like Stranger Things.
Could these new original titles lead to games of their own, whether these are themed online slots, RPGs, or simple platformers? They certainly have the potential to be a wealth of opportunity for Netflix!
Here are 3 Promising Netflix Originals You Should Check Out
Inventing Anna
This shocking true crime story will be brought into glorious melodrama by the queen of drama series herself, Shonda Rhimes.
The story of a fake heiress, Anna Delvey (or Sorokin as she was found to be named), is one for the history books. Her life was the epitome of “fake it ‘til you make it”, but there was always a lot of intrigue around her. Was the Russian-German girl very committed to the role she was playing, or was she deluded into thinking she was in fact a New York trust fund baby?
Delvey made her way in the world leaving a long list of fraud offenses in her wake, claiming her German father would foot the bill. All of which is being gloriously brought to life by the teams that brought us Grey’s Anatomy, Station 99, Scandal, and more.
It was released on the 11th of February 2022, so you can already check it out on Netflix.
The Sandman
It’s taken a while, but the hugely influential Neil Gaiman comic book is finally coming to the screen. And it makes sense that it’s taken a while. The concept is notoriously difficult to adapt, some people say it shouldn’t be, with concepts like Destiny, Death and Desire all personified, and talking to history’s most important characters. Added to that, it’s a comic book that doesn’t feature superheroes. Hollywood hasn’t the best track record there.
However, Netflix does. Technically, The Umbrella Academy are superheroes, but we see very little of that and more like man-children that happen to have powers. Aside from that, Netflix doesn’t have much experience in the genre. They’re going to have to pull out all the stops to impress the much more dedicated fanbase of The Sandman.
And it seems they have. Beloved Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance leads the trailer that features a grand set worthy of a Lord of the Rings reboot, with the relatively unknown but well-chosen Tom Sturridge taking the lead as Dream, and CGI that doesn’t evoke cringing is always a good sign. This look like a promising Netflix Original.
This show is available to stream on Netflix. It was released on the 5th of August 2022.
Devil in Ohio
We’ve all seen the start of the cult, the charismatic leader, the duped followers, the lives destroyed. Well, Devil in Ohio is taking a different stance with this addition to the Netflix roster. Daria Polatin’s YA novel follows Jules Mathis, who finds a 15-year-old survivor of a satanic living in her house.
Inspired by true events, Mae starts wearing Jules’ clothes, sleeping in her bed, cuddling up to her boyfriend, and Jules has to struggle to understand this girl’s trauma and the nearby cult that is determined to get Mae back.
So far details on the Netflix Original are thin on the ground, but we do know that Emily Deschanel is playing Jules’ psychiatrist mother, in a move that seems to suggest the focus will shift to her for a more adult adaptation.
We’ll have to wait to find out. The show is set for release on the 2nd of September 2022, so cross your fingers for some eerie horror and good scares.
