Creating a business dashboard allows you to have a central point where all your data is held. A creative dashboard design keeps you relevant in the industry you are working. In the past, these were not editable screenshots and sometimes, excel columns that were blurred by mind-numbing statistics.
Today, these are categorised as analytical and operational. The truth is that when it comes to online marketing, your unique dashboard designs star the show. When used wisely, they are revenue building machines.
Here are some design principles that will tell you how to create a dashboard.
1. Use the Right Charts
Understanding how to design a dashboard means that you need to use the right data visualisation. If you choose the wrong charts, you risk ruining everything. Therefore, consider the information you want to convey to your audience. Select the visualisation options that are suited for that type of information.
For instance, if you need to display patterns and how they change across continuums, use line charts. These are precise and clear. Pie charts are not advisable because users have issues comparing the sizes accurately. While the largest slice can be noticed immediately, there is an issue when it comes to the small sizes and what they represent.
2. Timely Delivery
Regardless of how useful the data you have, it will not help anyone if it is delivered late. If you deliver on time consistently, your customers will enjoy looking for data from you. Therefore, ensure that you adjust the data period you capture during the reporting sessions.
The publication should be made on time to support and help people in decision-making processes. Dashboard design principles dictate that if they are not delivered on time, you might have copied them from somewhere else.
3. Avoid Putting all the Information in One Page
Never create dashboard that is one-size-fits-all. It may seem easier and time-saving to cram all the numbers on one page but remember that your audience is a group of different individuals. Each individual visiting your site will have different interests. People in HR will not be interested in the same information as marketing specialists.
Therefore, make different pages on your website. These will allow your audience to enjoy the data they need without feeling overwhelmed. Make one for each job position.
4. Select Few Colours
Stick to the same colours and fonts that are on your logo. You can also decide to choose completely different ones. The tip here is to ensure that you avoid full page coloured image and choose shades that you will stick with throughout the dashboard. Play with the gradients in 2-3 colours.
Instant colours will draw the user’s attention to the information immediately, and they will not feel overwhelmed or lost. If there is a relationship between the items, you can make it easier for users to see this by using the same shade.
5. Good Layout is Paramount
Good dashboard design principles are more than just about good metrics. It is also about how these charts are placed within the website. When they are well organised visually, it will be easy for users to find what they are looking for.
Today, people do not have time to waste trying to figure out what your data is telling them. They will choose to go to other websites that have clearer information. As a rule of thumb, place all the important information from the upper left-hand corner.
