On the 2nd and 3rd of March 2012 about 8,000 lucky music fans in Johannesburg and Cape Town were exposed to one of the most awesome musical events of the year so far – the 5 Gum Experience featuring UK band Two Door Cinema Club. In Cape Town they were supported by The Plastics and Ashtray Electric and in Johannesburg they were supported by Isochronous and Desmond and the Tutu’s.
Music fans had to register on the 5 GUM SA Facebook page to apply for tickets for the show. A few SA Blogs also held competitions for ticket give-aways. Hype about the event spread like wildfire for the event on Twitter via the #5GumExperience hashtag. The event was the talk of the town on the Twittersphere in Cape Town and Johannesburg. I was privileged to be one of the chosen few (about 3,000 people) to attend the event in the Johannesburg. @BaasDeBeer and I made our way across the Boerewors Curtain to venture into the forgotten phenomena referred to as “the warehouse party”. We bumped into about 50 people we know from Twitter (and to list them all would make this a very long read). I was very impressed with all the acts on the evening. Isochronous, Desmond and the Tutu’s and Two Door Cinema Club were all excellent on stage. The vibe was electric and the Johannesburg Crowd truly came to the party (even though there were a lot of familiar Pretoria faces among them).
This documentary was published on Vimeo last week and features video highlights of both the Cape Town and Johannesburg 5 Gum Experience shows:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Sharman and all the organizers of 5 Gum Experience for the opportunity to attend an awesome event like this. I really hope that this becomes an annual institution.
